Международная научно-практическая конференция, посвященная 160-летию со дня рождения В.Г. Шухова

«Архитектоника инженера Владимира Шухова».

Цель конференции – способствовать полноценному диалогу между художественным и техническим творчеством в архитектурно-дизайнерском проектировании.


«Симфонический» подход к осмыслению технических идей, способность искать оригинальные методы решения инженерных задач позволили инженеру-механику В.Г. Шухову добиться высоких результатов и стать лидером в нескольких научно-технических направлениях. Он открыл принцип крекинга нефти; изобрел форсунку для сжигания мазута, до этого считавшегося отходом производства; рассчитал и построил первый в России нефтепровод; создал первый в мире мазутопровод с подогревом; руководил проектированием и постройкой первого российского танкера, по его чертежам строили огромные клепаные железные баржи, что по тем временам было чудом техники. Его достижения в области проектирования и строительства различных зданий и сооружений с применением легких металлических конструкций, в том числе большепролетных пространственных сетчатых оболочек покрытий открыли новые формообразующие возможности в архитектуре.

Место проведения – Московский архитектурный институт (Государственная академия), РААСН, Союз архитекторов России, возможны выездные заседания в Нижнем Новгороде, г. Выксе (Нижегородская обл.), с. Полибино (Липецкая обл.).

К конференции Российская академия архитектуры и строительных наук, Межрегиональная общественная организация содействия архитектурному образованию (МООСАО), Московский архитектурный институт (государственная академия), Союз архитекторов России, Фонд «Шуховская Башня», Некоммерческое партнерство инженеров АВОК проводят тематический международный конкурс дипломных проектов и магистерских диссертаций «Технические инновации в архитектурном проектировании» в рамках международного Смотра-Конкурса лучших дипломных проектов по архитектуре и дизайну в Санкт-Петербурге в 2013 году.

Для участия в конференции необходимо отправить тезисы докладов и заполненную анкету участника в Научный комитет конференции до 1 июня 2013 года. Доклады для последующей публикации представляются в письменном виде по направлениям работы конференции и рекомендациям секций. Языки представляемых тезисов и докладов. – русский и английский. It is widely assumed that the “nonclassical” nature of the Russian empire and its equally “nonclassical” modernity made Russian intellectuals immune to the racial obsessions of Western Europe and the United States. Homo Imperii corrects this perception by offering the first scholarly history of racial science in prerevolutionary Russia and the early Soviet Union. Marina Mogilner places this story in the context of imperial self-modernization, political and cultural debates of the epoch, different reformist and revolutionary trends, and the growing challenge of modern nationalism. By focusing on the competing centers of race science in different cities and regions of the empire, Homo Imperii introduces to English-language scholars the institutional nexus of racial science in Russia that exhibits the influence of imperial strategic relativism.

Reminiscent of the work of anthropologists of empire such as Ann Stoler and Benedict Anderson, Homo Imperii reveals the complex imperial dynamics of Russian physical anthropology and contributes an important comparative perspective from which to understand the emergence of racial science in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Europe and America.

Conceptualizing the Human is an interdisciplinary conference dedicated to the changing concept of the human in Slavic and Eurasian culture. While scholars, including Slavicist Mikhail Epstein, have recently devoted much attention to the “crisis in the humanities,” our conference will turn to the many ways in which “the human” has been perceived, re-imagined, interrogated, and critiqued.

The 1917 revolution induced a radical re-evaluation of what it meant to be human among Russian intellectuals. In the Soviet Union, writers like Platonov, Bulgakov, and Zamiatin envisioned how the human being might transform itself under changing social conditions. New technologies influenced Gastev’s and Vertov's close scrutiny of the mechanics of human action. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, Karel Čapek posed the question of what it means to be human in physical and cognitive terms in his science-fiction prose, as well as in terms of ethical judgment and the pursuit of truth in his mid-1930s trilogy. Earlier, thinkers such as Fyodorov, Chernyshevsky, Dostoevsky, and the Decembrists incorporated fantasies or critiques of the “new man” into their thought, while contemporary writers like Sorokin and Pelevin have used images of physical violence to challenge traditional notions of human dignity.

In keeping with the wide-ranging possibilities of this topic, we welcome proposals from scholars working in all relevant sub-fields of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies, such as literature, anthropology, history, political science, cultural studies, film studies, philosophy, and theology.

Paper topics could include, but are not limited to:
− Humans, animals, and the environment
− Humans, machines, cyborgs, and biomechanics
− Encounters with the non-human, e.g., in Stanisław Lem’s Solaris
− The influence of gender on human identity
− The New Soviet Man
− Human development: experiences of childhood
– Central and Eastern European depictions of 20th-century history as narratives of the failure of humanity
− 19th-century philosophies of freedom, individualism, and human dignity
− The problem of the human in Russian religious thought
− Psychiatric narratives of mental illness; the sick body
− Embodiment in the theater; “playing” human onstage
– Deconstructing the human; posthumanism

Conference Format
The goal of the conference is to provide graduate students with the chance to present their work to senior scholars in the field and to receive as much constructive feedback as possible. All papers will be made available prior to the conference through the conference website. At the conference each presenter will be given 5-10 minutes to introduce his or her paper, followed by commentary by the panel discussant and open discussion.

We will be able to provide travel subsidies for the conference presenters, as well as lodging for the nights of October 17 and 18.

Подходы и курсы, предлагаемые в рамках программы, сочетают в себе различные социологические и междисциплинарные методики, позволяют ориентироваться в системе многочисленных вызовов в отношении личности, общества и государства в современных условиях.

Jiwar opens a call opened to artists and researchers from all
disciplines who want to reflect on neighborhood relations, preferably
from participatory creative processes, thereby building a small human
map of the dynamics of interaction in the city of Barcelona.
Jiwar’s project revolves around neighbourhood’s philosophy, understood
as the privileged and necessary space of living and peer interaction.
Departing from the agreement with the Africa Center Foundation of
South Africa, Jiwar will host in residence during the month of
November 2013 the South African artist Sydelle Willow Smith, who will
carry out his project Making Neighbourhood through interactive
workshops with African immigrants living in Barcelona. The tools used
will be photography and video. With her permission, Jiwar opens a call
with the same name.
The implication of the Gràcia district will allow visibility to the
project with public presentations in the library Biblioteca Vila de
Gràcia and an exhibition in December in the Office of Citizen Services
of the district. Wherever possible, the work will circulate longer in
other parts of the city.
Requirements:
Artists and researchers (anthropologists, sociologists, architects,
urbanists, educators…) interested in contributing through their
creative research to a deeper reflection on the neighbourhood as a
necessary and positive value in the dynamics related to the city.

It will be valued:
- Experience with creative research within communities (participation).
- Own vision.
- Availability to meet weekly with the other artists involved in the
project who, despite their vision and discipline, will meet regularly
to share experiences and the process.
- Spoken English and Spanish.

recent work, a motivation letter and the project itself .

Travelling Narratives: Modernity and the Spatial Imaginary

International Symposium at the University of Zurich, 29 November – 1 December 2013

Cultures have always been in contact with as well as imagined spaces other than their own. Ever since the age of discovery, however, the relations, links and ruptures between different spaces have played an increasingly significant role in the cultural imaginary, taking on new urgency in today’s world of ever increasing mobility and global networks.

This three-day symposium hosted by the English Department at the University of Zurich will focus on spaces in relation, addressing the importance of issues such as borders and crossings, utopia, travel and exile in the sphere of cultural production. It aims to explore ways in which spaces are represented and textually produced, as well as how boundaries between different spaces are traversed.

The conference is primarily aimed at scholars working in the field of literary and cultural studies. However, as we believe issues of spatiality can be fruitfully examined in an interdisciplinary framework we invite contributions from different segments of the academic community.

Call for papers
We welcome submissions for 20-minute papers in English that may address, but need not be limited to, the following areas:

FUNG GLOBAL FELLOWS PROGRAM

Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. Fellowships are awarded to scholars employed outside the United States who are expected to return to their positions, and who have demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement and exhibit unusual intellectual promise but who are still early in their careers.

During the academic year 2014/15, the theme for the Fung Global Fellows Program will be “Global Diffusion.” The program seeks applications from scholars developing new, innovative ways to study global diffusion processes. The objects of diffusion could be specific modes of social categorization (such as “race” in census forms), principles of legitimation (such as democracy), government policies (such as minority quota systems), forms of conflict (such

as revolutions), or cultural practices (such as Tango dancing or marrying “in white”). We especially encourage analytically oriented approaches that identify recurring patterns and mechanisms through rigorous comparison of multiple cases or quantitative analysis, with broad geographic (preferably transcontinental) coverage. Researchers working on all historical periods of the modern age, all regions of the world and of all disciplinary backgrounds in the social sciences and humanities are encouraged to apply.

Applications are due on November 1, 2013. To be eligible, applicants must have received their Ph.D. (or equivalent) no earlier than September 1, 2004. Fellowships will be awarded on the strength of a candidate’s proposed research project, the relationship of the project to the program’s theme, the candidate’s scholarly record, and the candidate’s ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the program.
