On the 7th of December 2012, EUKN’s 5th annual conference will take place in Essen, Germany. The conference will be organised in close cooperation with the Ruhr Regional Association and the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations.

The EUKN conference is built around an interactive exchange on citizen participation in shrinking urban areas. To overcome the consequences of shrinkage, joint action is needed. Local authorities need to cooperate with citizens to find ways to maintain the quality of life in their city or town.

EUKN will present innovative examples of citizen participation with regard to their daily life in shrinking areas: health, education, employment, mobility, shopping and sports. Interactive on-site debates are an important part of the conference. They provide a deeper insight in successful policy approaches and offer insight into participatory process facilitated by local authorities.

At the EUKN conference you will have the opportunity to participate in an on-site visit. During this visit you will not only learn more about a German case, but you will also be given a presentation about a similar mirror project in another European country. In addition, you will be able to extensively discuss your impressions and experiences with your fellow participants. The discussions will be led by professionals who are actively involved with the issue of shrinkage. The on-site visits will take place in:

Social inequalities and segregation in post-socialist countries have recently become a topic of intense scholarly debate. Despite the assumed convergence with the patterns known from Western Europe and North America, the form and dynamics of segregation seem to differ in the post-socialist countries. National and local socialist legacies, pathways of transformation and differences in the integration to global capitalism may lead to a range of unexpected outcomes, raising questions about comparability between segregation in different post-socialist contexts and with experience in western capitalist countries. This session focuses on the commonalities and differences in processes and patterns of segregation, both between post-socialist countries as well as between the East and the West. As social segregation is the spatial manifestation of unfolding socio-economic changes, we adopt it as an umbrella concept that reflects many issues in contemporary social and spatial development. We invite empirical contributions and theoretical reflections on the following topics:

-          processes and patterns of segregation in post-socialist countries
-          types, forms and localities of segregation
-          differences between ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ urbanization and segregation
-          the role of socialist legacies, transformation reforms and interplay between global and local forces in the development of post-socialist residential differences and segregation
-          approaches, theories and methods for the study of social and spatial change in the post-socialist context: the applicability of theories developed in western context
-          the relevance of insights from the study of the post-socialist city for urban studies in general

“Socialist and post-Socialist Urbanisms: Critical Reflections; Comparative Perspectives”

Urban life in the 21st century has been shaped in quite significant ways by the thoughts, practices, ideologies and social organization of the 20th century. We seek papers that focus on the urban legacies of 20th century socialism and explore their impact on urban policy, spatial form and everyday life in the 21st.  With the neoliberal model
of city-building appearing to be in crisis mode and new approaches to urban issues urgently needed, we consider the possibility that a critical reassessment of the legacies of socialist models could provide valuable lessons for urban policy makers and citizens alike.

Actually existing socialism has taken many forms ranging from social democracy to repressive state socialism. The common thread of the ‘social’ that runs through them all is a commitment to the modernist idea of universal progress, a desire to create a socially de-differentiated society, and a heightened degree of state intervention in processes of city-building and urban governance. We seek papers that explore urban areas representing some of those variations of socialisms as well as variations in their fates. These could be cities that are socialist today, cities in countries that are transitioning to market socialism, post-socialist cities, and cities in neo-liberalizing former social democracies.

We particularly welcome papers that will contribute to the development of comparative perspectives (for example, Asia and Europe) if not within individual papers then from the sum of papers on the panel as a whole.

Papers could explore a wide range of topics including urban planning, housing, social policy, community development, local politics, economic restructuring and political ecology.

У Харкові відбудеться історична реконструкція першого публічного кіносеансу

У Харкові відбудеться історична реконструкція першого публічного кіносеансу, який відбувся 2 грудня 1896 року у будівлі Харківської обласної філармонії. Про це повідомила в ефірі обласного радіо начальник управління у справах преси та інформації ХОДА – співголова оргкомітету Міжнародного кінофестивалю «Харьковская сирень» Вікторія Маренич.

«Ми хочемо цього року піти на невеличкий експеримент – відтворити перший публічний кіносеанс. Нині дуже популярні реконструкції лицарських боїв або військових подій, цим займаються історики і зацікавлені люди у всьому світі. Ми працюємо над нашим проектом, і вже віднайшли декілька фільмів, які могли б бути першими у Харкові. Публіка у залі буде у тому вигляді, в якому вони могли б відвідати перший кіносеанс – костюми, капелюшки. Це все буде дуже природно, як це історично відбувалося», – підкреслила вона.

За словами Вікторії Маренич, у реконструкції візьмуть участь студенти харківських ВНЗ.

«Социологические и антропологические исследования феномена собственности в постсоветских обществах»

Собственность является одним из ключевых социальных институтов, поэтому неслучайно данный феномен привлекает внимание со стороны представителей различных общественных дисциплин - правоведения, экономики, политологии, а также социологии и культурной антропологии. В последних собственность рассматривается как многофункциональный феномен, который выполняет не только экономическую функцию (порождение капитала), но и другие важные социальные функции, такие как поддержание индивидуальной и групповой идентичности, воспроизводство политического порядка и социального неравенства и т.д.

Особую актуальность социологические и антропологические исследования данного феномена приобретают в контексте кардинальных изменений, которые произошли в постсоветских обществах в последние двадцать лет, прежде всего, в контексте перехода от режима исключительной государственной собственности к режиму частной собственности.Данная трансформация происходит не только через столкновения социальных и политических интересов, но и в условиях изменения культурных практик и идеологий собственности. Важным полем исследования оказываются не только общие тенденции трансформации режимов собственности, которые характерны для всех постсоветских обществ, но и уникальные особенности, возникающие под влиянием локальных практик.

Цель семинара –  представление и обсуждение социологических и антропологических исследований феномена собственности в постсоветских обществах.В рамках семинара предполагается обсуждение различных аспектов феномена собственности в постсоветских обществах, включая такие как
•       Культурные идеалы и идеологии собственности;
•       Соотношение прав собственности de jure с правами собственности de facto;
•       Роль и значение советских практик собственности в современном контексте;
•       Локальные представления и практики собственности;
•       Гендер и собственность;
•       Религия и собственность;
•       Этничность и собственность.
Рабочие языки семинара – русский и английский.

Проводить Міжнародну молодіжну науково-практичну конференцію «Національна історія у глобалізованому світі: виклики перед Україною»

12 - 14 жовтня 2012 р. в м. Києві планується конференція молодих науковців.
Запрошуються молоді історики віком від 17-ти до 28 років. Відбір відбувається на конкурсній основі, однак важливим буде рівнозначне представлення регіонів, віковий та гендерний поділи. Одним із основних завдань Конференції є спроба вироблення цілісного бачення на минуле України молодими науковцями. Тематика конференції не є обмеженою, вона обіймає як питання найдавнішої історії та археології України, так і проблематику сучасних соціально-політичних змін:
- Археологічні дослідження, місце античної історії;
- Роль Давньої Русі та Великого князівства Литовського та їх спадщини;
- Степовий чинник та його значення;
- Проблематика історії козацтва та міжконфесійного діалогу;
- Етнічні взаємини в історичному контексті;
- Роль імперій та виникнення національних рухів;
- Революції та їх значення;
- Питання постання тоталітаризму та опору йому;
- Світові війни та ідеологія рухів Опору;
- Радянська модель модернізації;
- Розпад імперій та питання «кінця історії»;
- Нова незалежна держава перед викликом глобалізації.
